Brother MFC-5460CN, printing, scanning, faxing, copying, and getting photo prints all at a low cost seems impossible? At first glance, the Brother MFC-5460CN appears to be just what you’re searching for.

This Brother MFD, like other Brother MFDs, has a no-nonsense, office appearance and a tough build. It’s not very big. A two-line, backlit LCD indicator on the front reports a lot of data and also allows you to access the control panel menu. The input paper tray holds 100 pages, which is sufficient for a small to medium office, and the 35-page ADF tray is foldable.

Design and Features

The machine has a rather big footprint, and a huge control panel in the front adds to its depth. The ASF can hold up to 50 pages and has a feed tray that folds neatly out of the way when not in use.

Lift the top cover to reveal a conventional A4 flatbed scanner and a four-color inkjet print engine that feeds up to 100 sheets from a front-facing slide-in cartridge. The same cartridge’s paper feeds out to the top cover.

The control panel is well-organized, with a two-line, 16-character backlit LCD display in the center. There are four well-illuminated mode buttons on the front for fax, scan, copy, and photo capture.

A telephone-style keypad is on the left, and navigation buttons, as well as color and mono Start buttons and a red Stop button, are on the right. Specialty buttons for print, fax, and copy choices are located on the far left.

Performance

Brother MFC-5460CN is actually not really fast machine. The black print and color print figures of 30ppm and 25ppm, respectively, are ridiculously optimistic. The five-page text document took one minute and 48 seconds to print, resulting in a 2.7ppm print speed.

The color test took two minutes and fifteen seconds, with an even slower 2.2ppm. While speed isn’t everything, especially in a home office where papers are often smaller, you’re still likely to have to wait for print jobs.

The photo print quality, on the other hand, is excellent. There is extremely little apparent stippling and no obvious banding when printed on Kodak picture paper. The colors are realistic, and there is considerable detail, but with some noise in the dark regions.

Brother MFC-5460CN’s sole consumables for the printer are the four ink cartridges; the cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges are each rated for 400, 5% pages, while the black cartridge promises to manage 500. There’s also a high-yield black cartridge with a page yield of 950.
